Proofs and Specimen Overprints of Newspaper Wrappers 1870-1901

Introduction

The introduction of newspaper wrappers was extremely popular by businesses as it reduced the printed matter rate from ld to ½d for up to 2oz, followed in September 1878 by a ld wrapper for heavier items of over 2oz and up to 4oz.

There are 4 Head types:
  • EWl (slightly embossed) from master punch die 1, vertical shading to hair ribbons with date plugs.
  • LW2 from master punch die 1, vertical shading to hair ribbons, date plugs replaced by florets.
  • LW3 ld wrappers.
  • LW2 from master punch die 2, horizontal shading to hair ribbons, date plugs replaced by florets.
Exhibit

Huggins identification EW1, LW2‑LW4 for head types and WPl to WP18 for wrapper types has been used. Excluded from this exhibit are STO wrappers and official use wrappers.

This exhibit seeks to show the production cycle of newspaper wrappers prior to being sold to the public. It commences with a description of the production cycle including a die 1 proof and striking book pieces, what could have been Die 2 is then shown, followed by examples of die 1 specimens. A penny wrapper previously attached to a contract and specimens are shown and it finishes with a die 2 proof and specimen. Most specimen overprinted wrappers are shown, 5 of which are believed unique.

RESEARCH
  • The identification of 5 previously unrecorded specimen overprints.
DIFFICULTY TO REPRODUCE/ IMPORTANCE

I believe it would be very difficult to reproduce this exhibit.
  • Large quantity of striking book pieces.
  • Only 2 Specimen wrapper types are not shown (WP17 & WP18), which I believe have not been on the market for at least the last 25 years.
  • I believe less than 10 of each type of specimen wrapper have survived.
  • I believe there are 5 unique previously unrecorded specimen overprint wrappers.
